THE HEROES OF PRESS FREEDOM
Meet our heros and play their lives!
The role play
The heroes of pressfreedom is an educational concept for teaching democracy and human rights with an emphasis on independent journalism. In The heroes of press freedom, partici- pants play a live role-playing game during a lesson. The concept is based on real events that independent journalists in Belarus have experienced 2020-2021. Through The heroes of press freedom, you will experience what it feels like to live in a dictatorship and learn what freedom of expression is and why independent journalism is so important for our democracy.
All the material needed for the role play is available on our website and it is based on stories by independent Belarusian journalists. After the role-playing game, the participants contact the main characters of the game online through an online meeting. The main characters all speak English. For each game there are questions to discuss and a teacher´s guide. In addition, there is a bag with props for the role-playing game and posters that can be used to set up an exhibition.
The teacher´s guide is an important part of the concept and this includes teacher training where Svanfield Media visits schools to inspire and help the teacher with the guidance of the role play and how to best use the webmaterial. Ingrid Svanfeldt has developed the concept together with photographer and graphic designer Charlotte Estman-Wennström and the company Svanfield Media. Ingrid Svanfeldt´s company Svanfield Media is behind the concept´s website and will sell the right to use the concept and the courses arranged in connection with the role play.
A TAILORED CONCEPT
Our idea is to give participating schools the opportunity to use the material on our website with tailored external help that can include courses for teachers with external lecturers and also supervisors visiting the schools. We want to tailor the concept together with participating schools, financiers and partners. A possible funding model is that the schools / teachers pay
a participation fee to participate and use the concept, for example for a year, but external funders pay a share, so that the schools´ participation fee can be kept low.
ARE YOU INTERESTED?
We hope to find financiers and partners who can help us publish the concept. We still think the concept can be tailored for many different target groups. Svanfield Media has good contact with Belarus and the concept has already been tested with the students of the Helsinki univer- sity’s Swedish School of Social Sciences and by artstudents in Jakobstad. Are you the one we are looking for?
